Website Design

What is the purpose of my website?

The website I will be creating will be for a primary school, it's purpose is to help parents find out about events or to offer support if they have any problems and also theres an area for children to play educational games and to find out more about upcoming events.

Who will be the audience of my website?

Due to it being a primary school website the website will appeal to children by using bright colours and large font but also it will still be easy to use for parents and the parents section will contain more information than the child's section.

What does the website have to communicate?

The website can show the awards won by the school as this will impress the parents who may be looking for a future school for their child.

What will the personality of the website be?

The website will be fun and colourful so it appeals to children and the pictures will take up around half the screen.

Research into conventions

Researching Conventions:

Conventions are ways of doing things, having a navigation bar on the left side of a website is a common convention, for a newspaper a common convention would be having the logo at the top and the slogan just below it. Conventions are useful as the audience become familiar with layouts and will therefore find it easier to navigate around websites etc.
Conventions do not have to be used all the time, sometimes websites can break conventions to appeal to different audiences and stand out from other websites or newspapers. Below is an example of a school website that breaks conventions but that doesnt make it look good.

The usual conventions in web design are the navigation bar on the left with the logo at the top of the website, sometimes pictures are used in the background or to the right of the logo showing children at school.

The website above has the logo at the top with a navigation bar on the left and a picture in the middle.

This website breaks conventions as it has no clear navigation bar and doesnt have much information, but this website is very eye-catching and shows different objects with a book in the middle which had the links that will take you around the website.

As media practical, Preliminary Task

This is my analysis about Robert Pattinson School

Below is my analysis of 'The college'

Below is my analysis of Oxford School

Below is my analysis of Lsst school

Below is my analysis of Ling Moor
Primary school

I have looked at 5 different school websites and i realise that they all have fairly similar conventions such as a picture of the school in the background of children looking happy to be at school or simply the school looking environmentally friendly. I also noticed that all five of the websites i have looked at have navigation bars on the left hand side and they do this as this is a layout that is used in most websites so viewers will be familiar with the positioning of the navigation bar. All the websites have different colour schemes which tend to be the colours of the logo.
For my website I will use an easy to use navigation bar on the left side that, i will use two main colours and have a picture to illustarate how environmentally friendly the school is.
